Do you want to inspire your audience and sell more books? Then this article is for you. I’m going to show you how it’s really done.

I say “really” because some so-called gurus try to make this complicated. The truth is this is really is very simple.

To sell more books, you need to become a better storyteller.

Why?

Because…

Stories grab attention in seconds — a must.
Stories disrupt thinking, in a good way.
Stories are memorable.
Stories build trust.

Aren’t these exactly the things you need to get your message out and get more sales? YEP!

Here’s the thing that no one has told you:

There is a difference between writing stories to educate, inspire, or entertain and writing stories to influence or sell. The latter is referred to as writing “copy” and it’s why copywriters are among the highest-paid writers.

Now the truth is, I had NO IDEA what copywriting was when I wrote my first book or tried to sell my first coaching program (what a disaster ). But as the saying goes…

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.”

And the funny thing is, I didn’t “learn” it until after I had spent years beating my head against the wall. But that’s actually good news because no matter how bad things are right now, if you can learn how to write good copy (i.e. tell better stories) things can turn around for you. I am a witness!

So let’s break this down…

Successfully selling with stories is all about making your story EXCITING (not boring) using 4 key elements and a simple framework that I call the 5 Ps.

But I don’t want to overwhelm you with info (isn’t that the worst) so let’s start with the 4 keys and I’ll break down the 5 Ps in the next post.

Cool? Alright, here we go!

Exciting stories have 4 main components:

The Main Character: Depending on the story, it could be you or your reader/client.

A Villain: Roadblocks/obstacles that are standing in the way of the character’s success (note these can be external or internal).

A Hero: Embodies the character's desires, wants, i.e. their ideal solution (your book or business).

A Victory: The character finally overcomes obstacles/setbacks and achieves their vision/goals/desired outcome against all odds. They are now an inspiration to others.

Now, this should look familiar because it’s actually something that we all experience every. single. time. that we read a novel or watch a movie. Hollywood has these 4 keys down!

And that’s actually my big piece of advice for today.

Step #1 of How To Attract Your Ideal Audience and Get Them Excited About Your Book is all about helping you get better at storytelling to sell by doing THIS:

ANALYZE your favorite movie and identify the key elements of the story. This will put you in the mind frame of a screenwriter and movie producer. Think about it — screenwriters and movie producers are among the best salespeople — they have to be because movies cost a TON to produce. If they don’t get people to turn out in droves, the movie is a flop, and soon their career will be too.

Thinking like you are in the movie business (AKA a copywriter) is ESSENTIAL for authors who want to increase sales because:

Writing a great book won’t get you noticed. #facts

Until you learn how to write good copy, your stuff won’t sell.

But when you master putting these 4 keys into your social media posts, blogs, website, webinars, etc. you can win your audience over and get sales — in-person or online.

So what action will you take as a result of this post? I hope you’ll commit to analyzing your favorite movie and start practicing how to write good copy.

You can do that by:

Reading and studying the masters, like Russell Brunson (check out his Traffic Secrets, Dotcom Secrets, and Expert Secrets books) or Jim Edwards (invest in his Copywriting Secrets book).

Oh and be sure to look out for the next post where I break down the complement to the 4 keys, the 5 P formula.
